The Efficient MD: How a Medical Student Uses Evernote as a Peripheral Brain

so is he now going to get a bill from the journals asking him to pay for distribution of their content which can be upwards of 50 per instance of sharing?

    Good tips!

love evernote for this stuff. But absolutely do not distribute this content in a public folder! I'm also a student and we get pretty lax with copyright issues, and this is definitely a big no-no, unfortunately...

Thank you for blogging about this! I owe a shout-out to you for your previous work with Evernote, unfortunately however I wasn't made aware of your previous posts until I'd finished the video.

This is a great comment and something I have discussed locally with my librarian and looked into a bit. Truly the best way to provide articles to team members is by sending a link to the article on a publisher's website. This eliminates any concerns vis-a-vis licensing etc. Practically speaking however all the articles I share are shared between colleagues at the same institution which purchases access to these articles. Sharing articles to a broader anonymous Internet audience would be dubious. In the spirit of providing excellent patient care I have virtually no personal issues with sharing papers with my colleagues -provided we are working at the same institution. Additionally I feel it is important to password protect these materials. I understand that this functionality will be available soon.

    Best,

    Ryan,

can you discuss how you integrate papers and evernote. It looks like using them both is duplication of services. How do you see them solving separate issues?

    Thank you for asking!

I do use both Papers and Evernote. The way I see it, they are servicing separate needs. Papers serves to harvest the meta-data for my academic papers, which I can then assemble into subject collections relevant to my reading and research. Of course the biggest advantage there is that I can export those collections to ENDnote.

Evernote allows me access to my papers from anywhere, plus, with evernote I am storing lectures, relevant snippets of papers, pictures I've taken from textbooks, textbooks I've scanned, photos I've taken with my iPhone, and frequently referenced tables or charts, not to mention scheduling stuff, and notes to self.

Although I didn't demonstrate it in the video because I figured it would be too complex, may actual workflow entails the following:

    1. Download a paper and drop it into PAPERS.
    2. Match the paper in PAPERS (I have it set to include the full title)
    3. Drop the paper from PAPERS into EVERNOTE.
    4. Synch
***note, this is slightly more work than only using one or the other, but in my opinion, it pays off. Also, I am not using the iPhone application of Papers currently because I feel evernote does a better job of giving me access to my articles PLUS. For example, if I search for "kawasaki" in Papers, I will get articles about Kawasaki. But if I search for "kawasaki" in EVERnote I will get articles about kawasaki, plus pictures, tables, and flow-charts I have clipped out of the Zitelli Atlas, Nelson's Textbook of Pediatrics, and Harriet Lane.

Perhaps a one sentence summary is that Papers gathers data for me and is exportable to ENDnote. Finally, I also enjoy the interface of papers, and the ability to read PDF articles full screen, something Evernote does not currently offer.

Are you using both as well?

I'm using Papers but not Evernote. I downloaded the iPhone application for Papers and have been underwhelmed (it doesn't "just work"). Your video is impressive and is making me consider going to evernote. I use yojimbo and found it was terrible at storing PDFs and figured evernote would all done in the same way, the everything bucket problem. http://al3x.net/2009/01/31/against-everything-b...
