The Efficient MD: How Doctors Can Use Evernote As A Professional Memory Accessible Anywhere, Part 3: How to Use Evernote as an Electronic Health Record (EHR)

Really great article, thanks! It was linked to me by a good friend/client (an Osteopath) whom I was discussing the possibilities of Evernote with a while ago. I had called the company to inquire about integrating their technology (e.g., into a client/server app), but never got a response. I also second your sentiments about the Fujitsu ScanSnap and Textexapander. We've set up many offices using these two indispensable tools. Evernote makes it a troika!

It is possible to export a complete notebook to a USB disk with a portable version of the Evernote software. Instead of having a laptop dedicated to your patients database, you could have a USB disk that you could use with different computers.

Wouldn't that be useful? But no -- as far as I can tell, you can't relocate the Evernote database.

I use a USB memory of SanDisk (Cruzer) with 8 Giga of memoy wth the U3 standard and Evernote 3.0 already installed and running from this device.
This let me to protect the memory stick with my password (the memory stick is encripted and without password is impossible to access at data stored inside).
With this technology You can store very sensibles data without fear to forgot the USB stick (or stolen !!!).

First I would like to preface this by saying, this was a very informative article. At the same time, though, I'll admit that I am more than a little perturbed by the repeated use of the words, "If HIPAA is not a concern." Everyone should be concerned with the HIPAA laws and the privacy rights of individuals. It's extremely irresponsible to suggest otherwise. If by some fluke, Evernote's databases were hacked, or a nosy employee decided to go snooping around, who do you think would be at fault?

In this case, do not trade your own "need for efficiency," for the ethical and lawful treatment of your patients. Do yourself a favor: In Evernote, click Account --> Properties --> and unclick Synchronize automatically. Take your password out for an extra safeguard.

By the way, Evernote can be installed on a disk drive. I just installed the app on my Ipod. Just click Application --> install Evernote Portable --> choose external drive.

All good points. Please see http://efficientmd.blogspot.com/2008/09/evernot... for a detailed discussion about HIPAA and privacy issues. On the Mac version of Evernote, I was unable to find the Evernote portable application. Is this only on the Windows version?

Another way to use would be to install Evernote on a portable harddrive (like Freeagent go 320gb comes for ~$100).
